Neil Spencer Understands

From today's Observer:

Mekons
Natural, (Touch & Go) £11.99

Celebrating an unlikely 30th anniversary, the Leeds tricksters eschew urban pleasures for nature's delights. The result is an English counterpart to the gothic country of the Handsome Family. Ramshackle backdrops of fiddle and echoing guitar are the setting for tales of demented midsummer celebration, dark woods where "twisted trees sing" and foxy goings-on behind a "white stone door". The playful mood occasionally gives way to a darker hue - on "Burning in the Desert" "martyrs queue up for heaven, children queue for hell". Otherwise, this is Hank Williams meets The Wicker Man, clever and entertaining. A Mekons record, in fact.

Neil Spencer is an astrologer twat and Richard Dawkins whupped his sorry ass like a ginger stepchild on TV the other week, but he got this mostly right (except for word "English" but who would expect complete accuracy from a man who thinks the stars have arms that reach out and touch us on our birthdays?)

Why is the Observer letting an astrologer near its music reviews? I realize neither is exactly a science, but how the fuck are the two related?

In fact, having said that, how much less likely is it that you would trust a man's judgement on anything if you know he believes in astrology?

Actually before peddling hogwash he used to edit the NME when it was a vital part of the nation's culture- how art the mighty fallen eh?

So he does know a thing or two about meaningless charts then.Maybe that's how he does his reviews, he doesn't listen to the records just plots the date they are released on a skymap or whatever it is they use.

Yep. And that determines how many he stars he gives it.

I'll get me coat.
