Anarchist Writers

A shameful oversight on my part not to include the Anarchist Writers blog on our blogroll. Consider this now remedied.

You'll find news, history, theory, interviews, sexual politics, reviews, and where Karl Marx got his ideas from. Even the wrong ones!

That's one criticism of Marx I will give you. He was often an ungenerous critic, and took more from those he slagged off than he made clear. Hurray, some agreement!

Ha ha. Well that WAS my point about historical materialism too.

Yes, but my point there was that this was a genuine innovation on Marx's part. I could be wrong about that, but the way you hedge your own sentences seemed to suggest to me that you weren't sure at all! Assuming what I've read is true, the fact that 'historical materialism' is these days a common place is down to the fact that Marx's genuine innovation is now unconsciously acknowledged by everyone. That is, we are now all Marxians in the same way that we are all Newtonians.

I was hedging my bets simply because I haven't gone to all the original reserach and historical documents that Marx used, so I've no way of knowing whether they were conducted with an identifiably historical materialist approach. I'm just suggesting there might have been "a lot of it about" and that might well explain why so many historians today take it as a given. Of course, there are still plenty of historians who believe in a "Great Man" version of history, but then, of course, that probably includes most fans of Marx. ;-)
